Your cousin likely found an oviductal cast of caseous material, called a ‘lash egg’ by many backyard flock owners. Oviductal casts are developed by birds in the face of salpingitis, or infections of the oviduct.

They may be expelled as ‘lash eggs’ or remain in the bird, potentially causing oviductal occlusion or rupture. Salpingitis is a complex bacterial condition typically arising from an ascending bacterial infection.

Systemic treatment yields mixed results. Prevention is best accomplished with excellent coop hygiene and maintaining a healthy body weight in hens to minimize reproductive tissue eversion during the laying process.

‘Lash eggs’ are not true eggs, but simply accumulations of caseous material, potentially admixed with egg material.
