Veterinarians play an important role in the management of honey bee colony health and in advancing the health of both managed and wild bee populations. Effective engagement with this species requires a foundational understanding of honey bee biology, behavior, and husbandry. This presentation provides an introduction to core principles of honey bee biology, standard beekeeping practices, and the fundamentals of the hive inspection.

In this session, we will review common food animal toxicants, including nitrates, cyanide, copper, sulfur-induced polio, lead, urea and ionophores. Using photos and videos we will review clinical signs and discuss treatment options, documentation of toxicity and preventative strategies.

In this lecture, we will examine the less common complications of a common disease, feline urethral obstruction. We will discuss the management of hyperkalemia, post obstructive diuresis, uroabdomen, urethral tear, and patients that you struggle to catheterize. We will discuss the mechanisms behind atrial standstill and how to manage it, and why some hyperkalemic patients may in fact be tachycardic.
