Dogs treated with glucocorticoids (e.g., prednisone) frequently drink and urinate more; always advise owners to allow free access to water and ensure the dog is allowed out more to go to the bathroom. Also expect increased appetite and panting. These clinical signs resolve once treatment is stopped.

Chronic treatment with glucocorticoids causes iatrogenic hyperadrenocorticism (a.k.a HAC, Cushing disease). Dogs with this condition can have clinical signs consistent with naturally-occuring HAC, including weight gain, pot-bellied appearance, and a thinned haircoat but signs resolve on cessation of treatment. Diabetes mellitus is an uncommon complication of chronic steroid therapy in dogs (and cats).

An iatrogenic problem is one caused by the therapy itself.
