The mare is pregnant – this ultrasound image shows a 25-day-old conceptus. The yolk sac (dorsal) and allantoic cavity (ventral) are nearly the same size, divided by the embryo. The heart beat is visible beginning at day 25 (and was visible during the live scan of this mare).

A two-week pregnancy is imaged as a small, round, anechoic structure with bright hyperechoic dashes on the dorsal and ventral aspect of the yolk sac (called “specular reflectors”), located within the lumen of the uterus. 

This image is not consistent with uterine trauma, endometritis, or a twin pregnancy.
