Compared to other types of hays, alfalfa tends to be higher in calcium, protein, and energy. This is important to know because feeding alfalfa hay is associated with the formation of stones (e.g., enteroliths or urinary tract stones) in horses. 

Alfalfa hay is also associated with blister beetle (cantharidin) toxicosis.
