Lidocaine is typically the first choice to treat ventricular tachycardia (VTach) in dogs with GDV. In fact, we put most dogs with GDV on a lidocaine infusion to help prevent or minimize the occurrence of this dysrhythmia.

VTach is characterized by ventricular complexes that occur in runs of >30 seconds. Heart rate is high, usually >170 beats/min.

Also evaluate and treat any abnormalities in hydration, electrolyte levels, blood pressure, oxygenation, and pain level as these abnormalities can additionally affect cardiac function.
