Acepromazine is a phenothiazine tranquilizer/sedative that also causes vasodilation, inhibition of emesis, muscle relaxation, and has anti-arrhythmic properties (only when administered with halothane).

Acepromazine blocks dopamine receptors in the brain to produce sedation and anti-emetic properties. Blockade of peripheral alpha-1 adrenergic receptors produces vasodilation and hypotension.

It does not provide analgesia.
