Splenic torsion may occur concomitantly with gastric dilation/volvulus (GDV).

Splenic torsion results from twisting of the spleen on its pedicle, leading to occlusion of blood flow and subsequent engorgement and thrombosis of the splenic vessels and splenic ischemia.

Large-breed, deep-chested dogs are predisposed to both splenic torsion and GDV.
