Veterinarians
Next Renewal Date: June 30, 2027
Renewal Frequency: Annually on June 30
Total Required CE: 18 hours
Required Subjects: At least 12 of the 18 hours must focus on professional skills and knowledge directly related to veterinary medicine. Up to 6 hours may cover non-scientific veterinary topics such as practice management, communication skills, and regulatory programs. Veterinarians who obtain or renew a Maryland controlled dangerous substances (CDS) permit have a separate one-time 2-hour CE requirement on prescribing or dispensing CDS; those hours may count toward the annual veterinary CE requirement.
Allowed Online: All 18 required CE hours may be completed online. RACE-approved courses are accepted without individual Board approval, making RACE-approved ZukuCE courses eligible for Maryland CE.
Record Retention: Veterinarians are required to maintain an accurate record of attendance for approved CE courses.
Audit Information: The Board may request verification of attendance for any continuing education course. CE credits are entered into the Board's licensing portal for renewal.
Additional Information: Newly licensed veterinarians are exempt from providing proof of CE for 12 months from the date their license is issued when registering for the first time. Unused CE credits from the preceding licensing year may be applied toward the following year's requirement.
Veterinary Technicians
Next Renewal Date: Varies by individual three-year registration cycle
Renewal Frequency: Every 3 years, with registration expiring June 30 of the applicable renewal year. Unlike veterinarians, Maryland registered vet techs (RVTs) are not all on the same annual renewal schedule.
Total Required CE: 24 hours
Required Subjects: CE must be directed toward improving, advancing, enhancing, or extending professional skills and knowledge related to the practice of veterinary technology. No specific mandatory subject is identified for all RVTs.
Allowed Online: All 24 required CE hours may be completed online. RACE-approved courses are accepted without individual Board approval, making RACE-approved ZukuCE courses eligible for Maryland CE.
Record Retention: RVTs are required to maintain an accurate attendance record for approved continuing education.
Audit Information: The Board may request verification of an RVT's attendance at any continuing education course. RVTs enter their CE credits into the licensing portal for the applicable three-year renewal period.
Additional Information: Maryland RVTs may qualify for conditional renewal when CE requirements cannot reasonably be completed because of exigent circumstances, such as an armed services commitment, or when the technician submits an acceptable plan to complete the missing requirements.
