Veterinarians
Next Renewal Date: December 31, 2026
Renewal Frequency: Annually
Total Required CE: 20 hours
Required Subjects: 2 hours on the abuse of controlled substances per annual renewal cycle.
Allowed Online: 20 hours total (no more than 10 hours may be non-live/asynchronous)
Interactive Required: At least 10 of the 20 required CE hours must be completed through in-person or live interactive attendance. Live interactive online CE qualifies when it provides synchronous two-way communication and the required participant interaction. Zuku CE is RACE-approved, and Zuku’s qualifying live, interactive online CE can be used toward North Carolina’s interactive CE requirement.
Record Retention: Veterinarians must maintain CE documentation for their three most recent renewal periods. Since veterinarians renew annually, this means maintaining records covering the three most recent annual renewal periods.
Audit Information: The North Carolina Veterinary Medical Board conducts random CE audits each renewal cycle. Licensees selected for audit must provide documentation of completed, Board-approved CE upon request. Failure to provide satisfactory documentation may affect license renewal.
Veterinary Technicians
Next Renewal Date: December 31 of the individual renewal year
Renewal Frequency: Every 2 years
Total Required CE: 12 hours
Required Subjects: 2 hours on the abuse of controlled substances per biennial renewal cycle. This requirement applies to veterinary technicians and may include recognizing signs of controlled-substance abuse or misuse.
Allowed Online: 12 hours total (no more than 6 hours may be non-live/asynchronous)
Interactive Required: At least 6 of the 12 required CE hours must be completed through in-person or live interactive attendance. Live interactive online CE qualifies when it provides synchronous two-way communication and the required participant interaction. Zuku CE is RACE-approved, and Zuku’s qualifying live, interactive online CE can be used toward North Carolina’s interactive CE requirement.
Record Retention: Veterinary technicians must maintain CE documentation for their three most recent renewal periods. Because technicians renew biennially, this means retaining records for the three most recent two-year renewal periods.
