Veterinarians
Next Renewal Date: April 30, 2028
Renewal Frequency: Every 2 years (April 30 of even-numbered years)
Total Required CE: 24 hours every 2 years
Required Subjects: At least 20 of the 24 hours must relate to the professional practice of veterinary medicine. No more than 4 hours may be related to business management. No other specific mandatory subject is identified.
Allowed Online: All 24 required CE hours may be completed online. Up to 8 hours may be non-contact/self-study CE. Live, interactive online CE, including RACE-approved ZukuCE courses, may count as contact hours.
Interactive Required: At least 16 of the 24 CE hours must be contact hours, completed in person or through live online CE that allows participants to interact with and ask questions of the presenter.
Record Retention: 4 years. Licensees must obtain and safeguard documentation showing participation and the number of CE credits earned.
Audit Information: CE documentation is subject to random audit by the Rhode Island Department of Health. Failure to provide satisfactory documentation when requested by the Board may constitute grounds for disciplinary action.
Additional Information: Veterinarians initially licensed after May 1 are exempt from CE requirements until the next renewal cycle. The Department may grant a single six-month extension when a licensee demonstrates hardship that prevented completion of the CE requirement.
Veterinary Technicians
Total Required CE: No state-mandated CE requirement
Additional Information: Rhode Island does not currently have a state veterinary technician licensing or registration program administered by the Rhode Island Department of Health. Because there is no state credential to renew, Rhode Island does not establish state-mandated continuing education requirements for veterinary technicians.
