Expect to see anorexia, ascites, and icterus with aflatoxicosis.
Aflatoxicosis occurs most commonly in the Southeastern U.S. when corn is contaminated by Aspergillus flavus, a fungus that produces aflatoxin. This mycotoxin is metabolized in the liver to a toxic metabolite that causes hepatoxicosis.
There is no effective Tx in affected animals, so best to prevent toxicosis. Use toxin binders in feed or blend contaminated corn with uncontaminated corn to decrease the final concentration in the feed.
See pulmonary edema with fumonisin toxicosis. Expect sudden mass mortality with gas toxicity or facility ventilation failure. Agalactia and dry gangrene occur with ergot alkaloids. Ochratoxin/cintrinin cause PU/PD with pale, firm kidneys at necropsy.
